Yeats in Love

A poet and a firebrand; the strange love affair of Yeats and Maud Gonne

“tread softly, because you tread on my dreams”

By Anne Tait, produced in Toronto, in Dublin & on CBC radio

When the insecure young poet W.B.Yeats first sees the beautiful Maud Gonne preaching rebellion on a Dublin street-corner, he imagines her as the incarnation of the legendary Kathleen ni Houlihan, the very soul of Ireland.

He is smitten, spills out his dreams to her, and takes her to a magical island where their souls unite and they dream of changing Ireland’s future. But … she is obsessed with freeing Ireland from the British Empire, has a secret life in Paris that Yeats knows nothing about, and is allied with a violent rebel, John MacBride.

Yeats is the most quoted poet of our time, known round the world. But few know about Maud Gonne, his great love, the woman behind so many of his poems, a proto-feminist, a fascinating woman who almost drove him mad. Discover their amazing story!
