The Story of The Underground Railroad
Celebrate Black History Month with Maple Blues Award Winners Diana Braithwaite and Chris Whiteley as they perform The Underground Railroad to Canada in song and story.
Diana Braithwaite is a descendant of the Wellington County pioneers in Canada. Diana’s ancestor’s escaped slavery in America through the Underground Railroad and lived for four generations in Wellington County, the first African-Canadian pioneer settlement in Ontario. Diana combines elements from Nina Simone, Esther Phillips, Lil Green and others to create her own authentic blues style with a unique sound that keeps traditional blues alive. Multi-instrumentalist Chris Whiteley was born in Kansas, and has performed on over 200 recordings with the likes of Leon Redbone and Blind John Davis.
With special guests, jazz pianist and vocalist Tim Louis, and emerging singer Lainey, who open the show with Songs by the Great Ladies of Jazz.
