Tamarak

40th anniversary re-union. Guelph-based Tamarack was a seminal step along the path of promoting and expanding Canadian traditional, and contemporary folk music. Their début album Music of Canada consisted almost entirely of traditional songs. Later albums (17 in total) included original songs that maintained traditional folk/roots subjects and style. James Gordon, Molly Kurvink, Alex Sinclair, and others reunite to celebrate this milestone of a legendary Canadian folk group.

BOREAL – A Folk Night Special

Celebrate the season with Jude Vadala, Tannis Slimmon and Katherine Wheatley. Their welcome winter songs conjure up vivid sights and sounds that every Canadian would fondly recognize; pine branches bending low, squirrels’ footprints in the snow, winter’s hush, shovelling, the sound of slap shots off the boards. Their rapport, both with each other, and with the audience, is warm, friendly, and genuine. With a multitude of instruments, and the soaring vocals of three of Canada’s finest harmony singers, Boreal is the ideal concert to get you in the mood for the Christmas season.

The O’Pears

Meg Contini, Jill Harris, Lydia Persaud are three songwriters who weave stories that stir the spirit, and capture the timeless character of folk music. Their soaring harmonies are seamless, evoking the intimacy of Nick Drake, the sister-like blend of The Staves, and the dynamic harmony of Crosby, Stills, and Nash. Each is a distinctly talented musician with a stand-alone voice, style, and stage presence. When they come together it is breathtaking. A striking mix of tight a cappella, rootsy instrumentation, and lush harmonies from Canada’s great new trio.

Dawud Wharnsby

Mark was the youngest member of the travelling Rust Family. An accomplished performer on a variety of instruments including piano, banjo, fiddle, mountain, and hammered dulcimer, Mark’s music and stage presence reflect the harmonies of nature, and the simplicity and beauty of life as he has known it growing up in the Catskill Mountains. A prolific composer, he has been called “one of the Northeast’s great undiscovered songwriters”.

Kitchener singer-songwriter Dawud Wharnsby has released 15 cds and 5 poetry anthologies. He has taken his songs around the world in concerts and live broadcasts. A multi-instrumentalist, children’s author, puppeteer, TV host, music producer, and urban farmer, Dawud seldom finds time to play in his home town, so this is a rare opportunity to hear him!
