Comedy @ The Registry

featuring Arthur Simeon with Sammy Farid and Mike Wood

Your Wednesdays are better with more hump-day hilarity!

Mike Wood

Mike Wood was born (against his will) in St.Thomas, Ontario. He paid his way through university as a street performer, catching a catapulted cabbage on a spike on his head. Combining two of Canadas primary exports, comedy and natural resources, Mike is now a comedian with a degree in mine engineering.

Mike has just returned to Canada after living for almost a decade in London, England. While living in London, Mike was a regular at plenty of tiny East London comedy rooms nobody can be expected to have heard of. He was also a semi-finalist in the Amused Moose UK New Comedian Of The Year, which is a big deal and you should feel bad about not having heard of it.

In the future, Mike will be trading shards of broken mirror for the physical affections of his fellow climate refugees. For now, Mike’s thoughtful and concise joke-writing is far and away his most marketable skill.

Sammy Farid

Sammy Farid is an Egyptian born Canadian comedian and actor. He speaks about growing up as a young immigrant trying to adapt to Canadian culture while maintaining his heritage. Sammy starred on CMT’s ‘Almost Genius’ and has produced many of his own comedic shorts, one even went viral racking up 20 million views!

Arthur Simeon

Arthur Simeon is a Ugandan-born Toronto-based comedian who has been performing for a decade all over the world. A truly gifted storyteller, Arthur has been invited to perform at the prestigious Just For Laughs comedy festival six times and appeared on CBC Television, HBO and the Comedy Network. His unique comedic voice and perspective has seen him featured in the Globe & Mail, NOW magazine and the Toronto Star. He’s also a regular on CBC Radio’s Laugh Out Loud and The Debaters.
Arthur is a banana bread connoisseur and lover of slow jams.

Journey to Freedom

“How I survived Human Trafficking and what can we do as a society to #endit.”

Ms. Timea E Nagy, International award-winning human rights activist and sex trafficking survivor has teamed up with local advocates and celebrities to deliver her story of survival, how she was given a second change in life in Canada, and how she found peace, love, and happiness.

Timea’s Cause Inc., a Cambridge based corporation, will be taking the stage at The Registry Theatre with Journey to Freedom to raise awareness of human trafficking in their first public performance featuring Timea Nagy telling her story with musical interludes including her original song “Life is Still Beautiful to Me”. The event also includes guest speakers David Morneau of Morneau Family Law, Laura Ross the Founder of The Grainary, and guest performance by local singer songwriter Amanda Kind. Proceeds from the event will go towards local victim efforts in human trafficking relief and tickets are available at www.timeascause.com/waterlooevent/

“Awareness is the key and our only chance to save and prevent our children to become a victim of this horrible crime. Our evening event was designed for the public to understand Human Trafficking, first hand. We are extremely excited to do this for the first time in Waterloo Region.” – Timea Nagy
The concert on September 27th will feature Nagy telling her story which has been quoted as “inspiring”, “unforgettable”, and “life-changing” and will be intercut with musical interludes including her original song “Life is Still Beautiful to Me” (available on iTunes and Spotify), “Jet Plane”, “Not Ready to Make Nice”, and various songs by David Cook accompanied by local musician Jason White.

Background

Timea Nagy is an internationally recognized human trafficking survivor, author, speaker, and social advocate. With her global reach she has recently been asked to join a part of the UN team in fighting human trafficking around the world and has worked with police organization across the globe and has been featured on CNN, The Economist, and other international media outlets. Nagy immigrated to Canada in 1998 when she was trafficked from Budapest, Hungary to Toronto, Ontario where she was held in a cheap motel and forced to work in the sex industry. Nagy, the daughter of a Hungarian policewoman, thankfully escaped and in her healing journey has devoted her life to raising awareness to stop the human trafficking system. Her journey was chronicled at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in the Turning Point Exhibition in 2014 and she has many acknowledgments for outstanding service including the Prime Minister’s Volunteer Award, Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal, and many others.

Nagy has had a tremendous impact and influence in victim advocacy in training police departments, banks, and hospitals in recognizing the patterns of human trafficking and as well as speaking at conferences and running workshops she has written, compiled, and sells various manuals on human trafficking for real estate, the hospital industry, United States law enforcement, financial institutions, service providers, and a Guide for Parents on Domestic Sex Trafficking written by the mother of a sex trafficking victim. Timea’s Cause Inc. also runs Timea’s Market of homemade and organic products for an at home spa kit which will be available for purchase at the concert. Timea’s Music is a public service announcement; a song written based on her story recorded in Budapest, Hungary in January 2018 and Journey to Freedom will be the first public performance.

Nota Bene Baroque Players

Adopted Homelands

Playing on authentic or replica instruments, Nota Bene’s professional musicians come as close as possible to recreating what the composers from the early Baroque to the early Classical period intended us to hear.

Discovering new worlds inspired Baroque composers. Handel came to England from Germany, and wrote for Britain’s kings. The quintessentially French Jean-Baptiste Lully was Italian. Plus more outsider music.

Anthea Conway-White ~ baroque flute
Rona Goldensher ~ baroque violin
Heather Carruthers ~ baroque bassoon
Borys Medicky‎ ~ harpsichord

Tamarak

40th anniversary re-union. Guelph-based Tamarack was a seminal step along the path of promoting and expanding Canadian traditional, and contemporary folk music. Their début album Music of Canada consisted almost entirely of traditional songs. Later albums (17 in total) included original songs that maintained traditional folk/roots subjects and style. James Gordon, Molly Kurvink, Alex Sinclair, and others reunite to celebrate this milestone of a legendary Canadian folk group.
