Montreal based Alejandra Ribera is a rising star in Canada, and internationally. Born to an Argentinian father and a Scottish mother, she follows up her 2014 SOCAN Songwriting Prize winning cd La Boca with her latest release This Island. Drawing on her rich cultural heritage, and cosmopolitan influences, her unique style straddles the line between popular music and jazz. The Registry theatre is proud to bring Alejandra to the Waterloo Region for the first time. Her amazing voice is the perfect complement to her alluring, rhythmic compositions that reflect the musical mosaic that she performs in English, French and Spanish.

Marina Nemat was born in 1965 in Tehran, Iran. After the Islamic Revolution of 1979, she was arrested at the age of sixteen and spent more than two years in Evin, a political prison in Tehran, where she was tortured and came very close to execution. She came to Canada in 1991 and has called it home ever since. Her memoir of her life in Iran, Prisoner of Tehran, was published in Canada by Penguin Canada in 2007, has been published in 28 other countries, and has been an international bestseller. In 2007, Marina received the inaugural Human Dignity Award from the European Parliament, and in 2008, she received the prestigious Grinzane Prize in Italy. In 2008/2009, she was an Aurea Fellow at University of Toronto’s Massey College, where she wrote her second book, After Tehran: A Life Reclaimed, which was published by Penguin Canada in 2010. Marina regularly speaks at high schools, universities, and conferences around the world and sits on the Board of Directors at CCVT (Canadian Centre for Victims of Torture) and on advisory boards at ACAT (Action by Christians for the Abolition of Torture) and PEN Canada.

Marina’s story is accompanied by Motus O dance theatre providing the audience with a rich experience of a disturbing story.

Shari celebrates 43 years as a touring recording artist and multi-instrumentalist violin, mandolin, piano, guitar, dulcimer, & harmonica). From Pied Pumkin through The Hometown Band, and on as a solo artist has lead to 23 albums – including her collaboration with Bill Henderson and Roy Forbes (UHF), Barney Bentall & Tom Taylor (BTU), and more recently The High Bar Gang, a 7 piece bluegrass band with Barney Bentall & Colin Nairne.

Her work has garnered 2 Juno awards, several Juno nominations, an induction into the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame, and a 2014 CFMA for English Songwriter of the Year.

Shari is joined by daughter Julia Graff, now 26 with a Masters in Sound Recording from McGill University – an accomplished multi-instrumentlist, busy recording engineer, producer, videographer and photographer. Julia engineered Shari’s most recent solo album “Everywhere I Go”, and has produced 2 videos for the High Bar Gang’s recently Juno nominated True North album.

Rounding out the Trio is fellow High Bar Gang member Kirby Barber.

This is our 12th concert honouring friend Merrick Jarrett.

AWARD-WINNING ARTIST JANICE JO LEE STARS IN A MUSICAL COMEDY ABOUT THE JOURNEY TO FIND HER PLACE IN KITCHENER AS A STRONG, EMPOWERED, KOREAN WOMAN.

Dr. West, Pluto’s leading expert on Earthian Friendiology, presents the findings from his latest experiment on Lonely Entity 1, the patient Janice Joanne Sung Hae Lee. Janice volunteered to be a part of the program because she was lonely and out of options. Mike is a charming and handsome white guy who is always looking for a way to “give back”, and so volunteers to be a part of the program and is paired with Janice despite Janice’s friend, Leila’s protestations.

The play is largely inspired by Janice’s personal experiences living in Waterloo Region. This is a satire exploring how a dominant culture can program people to erase their sense of self, their ancestors, and their identity.
