Steel Rail

Quebec’s Dave Clarke, Ellen Shizgal and Tod Gorr return to Folk Night. Striking original material and a fresh acoustic sound have made Steel Rail a favourite of fans and critics over the last two decades. The Quebec band’s three albums have received rave reviews. Dave, Ellen and Tod have also been acclaimed for their lush harmonies, Dave’s stellar picking – he’s been hailed as one of Canada’s best acoustic guitarists – and a sound that gets its sensibility from folk, and its soul from bluegrass and old-style country. Steel Rail played for us in March of 2007 in our very first Folk Night season. Welcome back.

VOC Plays the Movies: Dracula: Pages from a Virgin’s Diary

2002 silent version of Bram Stoker’s iconic story. One of the world’s leading exponents of silent films, Winnipeg’s Guy Maddin produced Dracula for CBC television, starring Zhang Wei-Qiang as Count Dracula. Shot as a dance film featuring the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the film features traditional silent techniques, including title cards. Not strictly black and white, special effects add colours to tint certain elements such as green bank notes, and blood. Produced by Vonnie Von Helmolt, with choreography by Mark Godden.

The VOC Silent Film Harmonic are a group of accomplished musicians whose approach to playing to silent movies is explained by bassist and group leader Ted Harms: “The blockbuster movies of the 1920’s came with symphonic scores, and big-city theatres had their own orchestras. However, most film music was supplied by pianists or small ensembles that worked from classical themes or cue sheets of generic-themed music serving as the basis for improvisations. This is the tradition that the VOC pursues”.

VOC Plays The Movies is introduced by Andrew Hunt, Associate Professor of History at the University of Waterloo. Specializing in United States history, the Civil Rights Movement, the Cold War, the Vietnam War, Conspiracy Theories in American History, and the History of the American West, his new course is titled “Rock ‘n’ Roll & United States History.”

A Jazz and R&B Tribute to The Beatles

Jason Raso Funktet featuring Joni NehRita and Rufus

When The Beatles exploded onto the scene in the 60’s, the Motown sound was at its peak. The Beatles covered Motown songs, such as Please Mr. Postman and You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me. But soon Motown and jazz artists would be covering Beatles songs. From Stevie Wonder and The Four Tops, to Herbie Hancock and Jaco Pastorius, many R&B, and jazz artists put their own spin on Beatles classics.

Now one of Canada’s great bass players, Jason Raso, puts his unique stamp on the music of The Fab Four. The Funktet features Brent Rowan saxophone, Thomas Hammerton keyboards, Nicholas Russell guitar, Adam Bowman drums, and Jason Raso – electric bass. Special guests, the soulful voices of Joni NehRita & Rufus.

Bill Staines

“He carries on where Woody left off – carrying on the tradition of stories and characters you wish you knew.” Nanci Griffith.

America’s acclaimed singer-songwriter has traveled across North America for 4 decades, singing his songs and delighting audiences. A New England native, he became involved with the Boston-Cambridge folk scene in the early 1960s. Singing mostly his own songs, he has become one of the most popular and durable singers on the folk music scene today. Many of Bill’s songs have appeared in school music books, church hymnals, and campfire songbooks, and he has eight songs published in Rise Up Singing Songbook. We are delighted and honoured to have Bill Staines perform at our 11th Merrick Jarrett concert, which remembers Kitchener’s icon of folk music.
